The 15th edition of the European Film Festival Cambodia (EUFF 2024) brings back European stories to Cambodia
The EU Delegation to Cambodia is bringing the European Film Festival Cambodia (EUFF 2024) back to Phnom Penh, guaranteeing a spectacle of cinema and culture to entertain and delight audiences of all ages. Marking the festival’s 15th iteration since 2003, this year’s celebration of cross-cultural exchange will host entries from 23 nations across Europe and showcase their visual-storytelling traditions. For 10 days, February 23 to March 3, audiences will be treated to free screenings of 22 films – all shown with English subtitles (and a few with Khmer) – across the city as Cambodia’s capital is transformed into a hub of cinema and culture.
Along with the French Institute, Meta House and the Bophana Centre, the EUFF 2024 is adding two new venues to accommodate this year’s exciting and eclectic selection of films.
Coconut Park on Phnom Penh’s Diamond Island (Koh Pich) will host an open-air cinema showing a number of submissions, including the animated feature “Even Mice Belong in Heaven”. On both weekends of the festival, this venue will also hold a pop-up “night market” where visitors can enjoy food and entertainment. The Legend Cinema at Noro Mall is also a screening partner for EUFF 2024 providing a true cinema experience; its offerings will include the award-winning LGTBQ comedy, “Dating Amber” [2020] with an English audio and Khmer subtitles, and the dramatic revenge film “Mitra” [2021]. To learn more and stay updated on showings at all the venues, check out the EUFF 2024 webpage and Facebook page.
Audiences will also have opportunities to participate in a series of special events that take them deeper into the world of film production. Throughout the week, select filmmakers will host Q&A sessions after screenings of their films, including Arash T. Riahi, winner of prestigious awards at the Chicago and Trømso international film festivals. A one-time masterclass on creative writing and low-budget strategies will also take place, with special guests Alejandro de la Fuente, a Chilean scriptwriter and audiovisual specialist, and Valerio Caruso from Cineuropa serving as moderators. All special events are free, but be sure to reserve your spot as seats are limited. To register, visit the EUFF 2024 Facebook page.
The festival kicks off on February 23 at the French Institute with a launch party and screening of the French film “Tempête” [2022]. The week’s festivities will wrap with a closing gala on March 3 at the new Chew & Bash Island Club at Coconut Park, followed by an open-air screening of the family film “Kratt”.
